The Portuguese women’s national football team has been placed in League B of the Nations League. This comes after their loss to Belgium with a score of 3-0 on Tuesday. There have been notable achievements and developments within the Portuguese football community, despite facing setbacks.

João Moutinho

João Moutinho has accumulated 146 international caps, ranking as the second most capped player for the Portuguese national team. He ranks second only to Cristiano Ronaldo in this aspect. Moutinho recently signed a contract extension with Sporting de Braga, which will keep him at the club until June 2026.

Vieirinha, a recently retired player, accumulated 25 international caps and scored one goal during his career. Miguel Veloso has participated in 56 matches for the national team, scoring three goals. Interestingly, 12 players who won the European U-17 Championship have not yet been called up to play for the senior national team. However, players such as Diogo Costa, Rafael Leão, and Diogo Dalot have earned starting positions on the team. Gedson Fernandes appeared twice for the senior team in 2018. Promising talents such as Diogo Leite, Florentino Luís, Thierry Correia, and Jota are being considered for potential call-ups. Several young talents, such as Luís Maximiano, João Virgínia, Diogo Queirós, and Rúben Vinagre, are considered to have the potential to be selected for the senior national team.

European U-17 Championship

In 2016, Portugal won the European U-17 Championship. The players under the guidance of Bino Maçães, including Rafael Quintas, are recognized for their potential. Many players have recently entered national professional competitions, showcasing an expanding talent pool. Looking ahead, Portugal’s U-17 national team is scheduled to participate in the upcoming U-17 World Cup in Qatar in November. Portugal achieved the third place in the U-17 World Cup in 1989. These recent developments highlight the skill and depth present in Portuguese football. They also suggest potential growth and success for the national teams at different age levels.
